John Lam

John Lam’s journey from a four-year-old dancer at the Marin Ballet in San Rafael, CA, to an internationally renowned artist is a testament to his relentless drive, passion, and talent. His extraordinary path began when Marin Ballet Artistic Director Margaret Swarthout recognized his potential and offered him a full scholarship through Performing Stars of Marin. Lam’s growth was further propelled by Cynthia Lucas, who honed his skills for advanced training.

At 15, Lam’s talent took him to the prestigious Canada National Ballet School under the guidance of Mavis Staines. There, he was one of the few North Americans awarded a full scholarship from the Pierino Ambrosoli Foundation in Zurich. Under the mentorship of ballet legend Sergiu Stefanschi, Lam’s artistry flourished, earning him the Peter Dwyer Scholarship for exceptional promise. Upon graduating in 2003, Mikko Nissinen invited him to join Boston Ballet II, where Lam’s rapid ascent culminated in his promotion to Principal Dancer in 2014.

Lam was a finalist in the Seoul International Ballet Competition and the only American male semi-finalist at the 2005 Helsinki International Ballet Competition. He received the prestigious Princess Grace Award and a proclamation from San Rafael’s mayor for his exceptional contributions to the arts. In recognition of his 20 years as a principal dancer, President Joe Biden, Governor Maura Healey, and Mayor Michelle Wu all honored him for his remarkable accomplishments.

A masterful performer and visionary artist, Lam has worked with legendary choreographers and coaches such as William Forsythe, Helen Pickett, Ken Ossola, Jorma Elo, Christopher Wheeldon, and Sorella Englund. His choreographed films, including Dance Is and The Air Before Me, have earned critical acclaim in international dance film festivals. Lam’s work extends beyond performance—he has taught at Harvard University and the Boston Conservatory, sharing his expertise with the next generation of dancers.

In 2024, Lam began his tenure as Associate Professor of Dance at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, continuing and expanding his legacy of mentorship. His unwavering passion for the arts led to the founding of Lam Dance Works—a bold, nonprofit dance organization dedicated to bringing groundbreaking, world-class performances to intimate settings. Launching its inaugural season in November 2025, the company enriches the dance landscape and sparks new conversations through innovation, artistry, and fearless exploration.
